Francine D. Ward is a business and intellectual property attorney with a focus on copyrights, trademarks, publishing, entertainment, and social media legal issues. Her business law practice focuses on drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, as well as counseling clients on the selection of appropriate business entities (e.g., C-corporations, S-corporations, LLCs, nonprofits, partnerships, benefit corporations), and how to maintain them.
A practicing lawyer for 25 years, Francine is a 1989 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. She’s admitted to practice in New York, California, and the District of Columbia. Additionally, she is admitted to the Bar of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for both the 2nd and 9th Circuits, and the U.S. District Court for both the Central District of California and the Southern District of New York.
Francine’s clients include individuals (e.g., authors, musicians, designers, content creators, entrepreneurs, professionals) and business entities (e.g., business owners, startups, entertainment companies, charitable nonprofits) that are building a brand, protecting an existing brand, developing content, starting a business, writing a book, composing music (lyrics or melody), collaborating on the creation of content, being sued for copyright or trademark infringement, wanting to sue someone for copyright or trademark infringement, or just needing advice regarding internet law related issues.
A believer in the old adage, “to whom much is given much is expected,” Francine provides free legal services to a number of individuals and nonprofits e.g., Legacies in Motion, a charity dedicated to helping underserved children and their families throughout the world; The Felix Organization, a charity that provides opportunities and new experiences to enrich the lives of children growing up in the foster care system; California Lawyers for the Arts, a nonprofit that empowers the creative community by providing education, representation, and dispute resolution; 10,000 Degrees, a nonprofit whose mission is to achieve educational equity and support students with need to access and complete higher education to positively impact their communities and the world.
Francine’s current law-related memberships include active leadership positions in the Intellectual Property Law sections of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of California. She is also a member of the International Trademark Association, California Lawyers for the Arts, the New York State Bar Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the Marin County Bar Association. Her current non-law related memberships include 100Marin, a Marin County nonprofit of 100+ people who are a part of a giving circle in support of local charities.

As well as practicing law for over 25 years, Francine has published two self-help books: Esteemable Acts: 10 Actions for Building Real Self-Esteem (Random House, 2003), and 52 Weeks of Esteemable Acts: A Guide to Right Living (Hazelden/HCI, 2005). Although a first-time author, Random House paid Francine an extraordinary 6-figure advance to publish her first book.

In addition, she has run two marathons (Honolulu and Los Angeles), a number of half marathons, and is preparing for her first trip up the mountain to Machu Picchu.
