Tara Higgins is a talented trial attorney with over 33 years experience. She focuses primarily in criminal defense, personal injury, and administrative law-professional license suspensions. She is a former prosecutor in Orange and San Francisco Counties. For the last 24 years, she has served primarily as a criminal defense trial attorney, with a reputation as an exceptional advocate with an unmatched tenacity for protecting her clients’ rights. Tara has first-chaired over 80 jury trials to verdict, and conducted more than 200 preliminary examinations and contested motions. She was lead counsel on six homicide cases, three of which were first degree special circumstance murder cases involving complex forensic and gang expert evidence. Tara frequently obtains dropped charges and/or acquittals in prosecutions. As plaintiff’s trial counsel, she has secured several six-figure settlements in personal injury cases, and prevailed in landlord-tenant matters representing landlords. She has also represented Wells Fargo Bank in several employee embezzlement/misconduct cases.
Tara helps clients manage potential reputational risk and to positively leverage any local, regional and national media coverage. She effectively develops a multifaceted approach to defending these cases, which includes comprehensive crisis management, as well as public relations strategies for responding to media. She truly understands that when an individual is investigated, arrested or charged with a crime, they face a crisis, which requires a lawyer equipped to plan a strategic response on multiple fronts, and manage interaction with police investigators, prosecutors, the private plaintiffs’ bar, the press, insurers, and the individual’s community.
Tara is a member of the Marin County Bar Association and former member of the Board of Directors for Alternate Defenders Incorporated. In 2016 she was awarded the A. Leonard Bjorklund Jr. Award for Excellence in Indigent Defense.
