Tara Higgins is an expert criminal law attorney. She was a prosecutor in both the Orange County and San Francisco District Attorney’s Offices before establishing her own criminal defense private practice.
She has first-chaired nearly 90 jury trials, some of which were first degree special circumstance murder cases that involved complex and gang expert evidence. Having successfully tried criminal cases for both the prosecution and the defense, Tara has intimate knowledge of how each side thinks and strategizes. She provides clients with an accurate assessment of each case, and offers a variety of strategies for dealing with police, the plaintiffs’ bar, the press, insurers, and the community.
In addition to her extensive experience in criminal law, Tara has also won six-figure awards in personal injury cases, and prevailed in landlord-tenant matters as well. Recently Tara successfully represented Wells Fargo Bank in employee embezzlement matters.
For many years, Tara served on the Board of Directors for Alternate Defenders, Inc. She has served as judge for the Youth Court Restorative Justice Program of San Francisco and for Mock Trial Competition for the Marin County Board of Education. In addition to her service to the legal community, Tara has chaired fundraisers for St. Isabella School, and has been a volunteer at WildCare and St. Vincent’s School for Boys. In 2017 she was awarded the A. Leonard Bjorklund Award for Excellence in Indigent Defense.
Tara earned her B.A .in Political Science (Russian Studies) from the University of California, Berkeley, and her J.D. at Santa Clara School of Law, where she was awarded honors in Moot Court and Oral Advocacy.
